Beauty Born in Flames, Planetary Series #115 Painting

After the 2017 fires in Sonoma, during which my house and studio –though completely surrounded by fire-- were miraculously spared, I decided to create a new body of work about what the fire did in and through me. Earlier in the night, before I had to flee my house, I had been standing in the warm wind watching the beautiful moon. When I was able after 2 months to get back to my studio I began making work that looked as if it had been through fire, even though it was completely fabricated. I rusted, burned and painted steel and began shaping the work into moons. As I continued with this process the moons became planets as I realized that the overall body of work was a meditation on global warming and the overall condition of our planet. Much of this work was featured in a subsequent museum installation, "Beauty Born in Flames.” While each piece stands alone as a powerful work, they show beautifully in series.
