About The Artwork

was waiting for the plumber to come to service our gas boiler so, to pass the time, I took my sketch book upstairs and sat looking into the very grand beech tree which grows outside our house. I had just begun to wear varifocal glasses and was aware of the fractured view I now had of the world. This was the way I would look at the world for the rest of my life. I have always loved this tree. It dominates the front of our house and is in fact taller by some way. Looking at the tree from the first floor obviously allowed me to look at it from a different perspective than the usual view from the ground. Time has had a huge effect on this tree; branches have seared off in the wind and large scars are evident where the tree has successfully protected itself. The paintings are abstractions of the shapes my varifocals presented to me that day.

Born in 1958, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. I am an oil painter inspired by colour, texture, composition and balance.Currently, my work grows out of an investigation of shapes I observe in reality. Though once the process of painting begins, the shapes are augmented and transformed. My work is rarely a simple description of things seen in the external world. Whilst working on a painting I try to discover the hidden principles of nature, its tensions and balances and the energetic principles that counter its tendencies to disorder and chaos. My work isn't philosophical, ironic or concerned with the conveyance of emotion. However, I hope that the viewer responds to the painting's colour and textures, whilst exploring relations of one shape to another and ultimately its relation to the space in which they find it.My recent work has moved beyond the expressive detail that it displayed in the past. Its construction is more considered and impersona. www.LisaCarruthers.Moonfruit.com
