About The Artwork

acrylic paint on paper In what is doubtless, among other things, a reference to Paul Weller’s Absolute Beginners, this rich painting creates a conversation between the lush and the sparse. The spaces between forms, blocks of colours and lines are often where the action is at its most vibrant, edgy in Darukhanawala’s paintings, and this one is no exception. The blank paper, characteristically barely visible, between the almost sticky, defiant blood-red sphere and the pinched flat-white surround move every time one looks at them, as if the red centre is trying to reposition itself, find a true centre or, at least, a comfortable resting-place. But why does he call it Beginner’s luck? Well, therein lies one of the eternal challenges of Darukhanawala’s work. The titles allude to everyday thoughts, emotions, sights, what one might term: psychologies. Darukhanawala has referred to himself as an ‘absolute beginner’ (cf. the 2015 interview with Prof. Woolf), and whether this nomenclature refers to the desired rejuvenation in his painting every day or his self-development more generally isn’t clear, probably isn’t meant to be clear, particularly since the painting and title have so many different dimensions and operate on multivalent strata. It is difficult to control an image of this kind in three different colours on this small scale, so the beginner’s luck may even be referring to the act of creating art. While being indifferent to the muscle-flexing of technique in art (as in music), Darukhanawala’s methods are courageous, never shirking from creating a new form of expression that has little regard for rules or preconceived notions of taste, craft and public expectation. Dimensions above include frame (unframed: 95 x 100 mm.)

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
