VIEW IN MY ROOM
Nana Coupeau, the protagonist in Émile Zola's novel Nana, is dying from smallpox. Born a poor girl forced to sell oneself on the street, Nana becomes a vedette overnight. She gains her fortune and fame through men, yet her resent towards the late 18th-century patriarchy ruins every single man close to her. Now the Venus, once a powerful, veracious man-eater in the high Parisian society, is decomposing. Her moral corruption is physical, and ironically, the men ruined by her still believe in her beauty and mourn her falling. Nana’s story is just a vignette of the dying French Second Empire in 1870, dying in people’s cries: “À Berlin! à Berlin! à Berlin!” Sunny borrows the epitaph of the legendary artist Marcel Duchamp and engraved it on the plaque under Nana’s name: -‐ D’ailleurs, C’est toujours les autres qui meurent. -‐ (By the way, it’s always others who die.)
