Best of the West Painting

The Sonoran Desert in the Southwestern United States captured my spirit with its exquisite mountains, vivid sunsets, and its abundant wildlife. Growing up in the Northeast, my image of a desert was barren and empty - how wrong that notion was! The Sonoran Desert supports so many plants and animals - many of which I had never seen before. I've created a series of Southwest landscapes to capture some of the feelings I now experience in the desert. This piece was created on watercolor paper, first with acrylic ink on the background, then with torn art papers for the mountains and desert ground. My cowboy has my own designed folded-paper clothing combined with cut paper, including hand-cut metallic card for the belt and other accessories. The prickly pear cactus is folded from Thai Unryu mulberry paper, and the desert dog from traditional Japanese origami paper. I hand painted the custom made mat to complement the feel of the image and the warmth of the desert.
