“Falling Up” is a series created in response to the Yorkshire landscape. Jagger revisited the area where she grew up to explore the landscape from a new perspective. Her sketches and paintings focus on the flow of water through the landscape, metaphorically water transforming from cloud to rain, then river source to sea, representing one cycle of life. The elements at play suggest the force of nature and inevitable passing of time, the man-made architecture and objects on the landscape provide signposts to locations, time and a human scale. This painting was created in direct response to the Yorkshire Dales, the River Aire and the walk home from Gordale Scar. Jagger presents the viewer with the spectrum of Yorkshire elements. “The land seems to absorb light in a specific way here, there is a real earthiness to it, a grounding in it. Moving your eyes from the path ahead to the expanse of the sky, it almost feels like the sky expands to meet your eye, pulsing large then carrying your gaze into the distance and back to the land once again, grounding you.”
