About The Artwork

The figure in Birds's Sway-II, which seems to be stuck in the yellow that permeates the entire painting surface, is like the angel in Albrecht Dürer's famous engraving "Melancholy", a symbol of the impasses of creative inspiration but also of intense ecstasy. The round celestial body refers to Nerval's "Black Sun", and the polygon-like geometric object right next to the figure refers to Saturn's preoccupations about numbers and measuring skills. The small copper-leaved, silver-colored branches on the ground are plants native to Saturn, grown on this earth.

Basic theme of my work consists of concepts such as flesh-body and abject. Melancholia-black bile which is constantly felt due to the corruption of body is also a phenomenon dominates my work. While reconstructing boundary conditions by forcing frame, I take figures out of the canvas by means of depiction phenomenal perception of massive bodies. One of the preeminent contests seen in my painting is ‘flesh’-the word doesn’t have any correspondence in Turkish-. We can only get the meaning word ‘flesh’ by gathering couple of words together such as skin, meat and lust. By taking the body as a fundamental issue, I produce works that refer the black bile, which is the substance of melancholy, through the floating bodily fluids, the mouth and bodily functions such as vomiting and bleeding. I make an analogy between the four humors theory of the antiquity and the body-abject concepts of contemporary art while portraying the modern-objective reality of flesh. Copper (yellow color), especially silver and gray have an important role in my paintings: When we consider the materiality of Saturn, the dark planet which is regarded as the counterpart of the melancholy in the microcosm, we confront with earth and lead. Kiefer uses lead in his works under the title of Saturnzeit. In search of a similar effect, I stick aluminum foil directly onto the canvas and use gilded-silvery paint in order to give a fragile and easily dispersed impression on the pictorial surface. Indefinable objects, dense silver… Shimmers arising from sun-moon-like images seen in my paintings repetitively, refer directly to the gray, dry and cold planet Saturn. According to Plato, when heroic madness or furor which is the source of all inspiration combined with black bile of melancholic temperament, it creates great people; it is devil's temperament. The ugly-grotesque body is a rebellion against Apollo with its rough and porous surface, its feces and liquids; it is a representation of Dionysian aesthetic and of resistance against modern-classical power. It is not possible to evaluate my work without considering grotesque body, body of ugly, expressive body -consuming, deflecting, emptying, deforming, breeding body- which has been mentioned on Bakhtin’s analysis on Rabelais. My work is a synthesis of bodies which the soul and the body form a single and interwoven structure.
