This title comes (again) from an R.E.M. song (Its the End of the World As We Know it). With the anthropomorphic circular heads I see three witches stirring a potion which must contain birds and snakes and other elements of dreams. This was the first time I painted oil crayon on wood panel, which works out very well in terms of capturing vivid color and texture in a larger format. For years I have done oil crayon on paper, or acrylic on canvas, and this style has opened up a new avenue. I have been painting since college, for over 26 years now. I took a long unplanned break when we first lived in Tokyo (for several years) but re-started semi seriously in 2015. Since early 2018 I have rented a studio and began working regularly again. This 2015 piece and the other piece "Thought Dreams" were breakthroughs in the sense that they came at a very tough time in my life personally, and led me to return to painting after a long absence. This piece, like most of my work, is inspired by my love of Kandinsky, Rothko, Rauschenberg and a bit of Warhol. I sometimes mix acrylic with pumice for texture and make collages with found photos or photos that I have taken. My biggest influence in terms of technique is Herb Jackson, the world's greatest living abstract expressionist painter. Trust me on this. I was his studio assistant from 1990-1992. If you don't know his work, you need to. Not that I don't like Pop, or conceptual art. Some of it is fantastic. I am a decent photographer, especially people and travel photography. I sometimes draw and paint figuratively, and am not half bad, but find the world of abstraction too mystical and beautiful and powerful to escape. So I do what I love rather than try to be what I'm not.
