I think of my work as being personal and being an expression of emotions and dreams. I am interested in the idea of the dream as being an expression of an unconscious story being revealed. The starting point of each painting is based on some form of narrative, which inevitably informs the course of painting. However, in the process of painting, it is not a question of making ever more references to the narrative, but a deliberate attempt to escape from it. Therefore the paintings may be observed for what they are rather than what they should mean.

Ingvill Gaarder born 1973, studied fine art painting, illustration, media art and photography at Kunstskolen i Bergen (Norway), University of Houston (USA) and Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London (UK) achieving a Bachelor and a Master's degree. Her work has been exhibited by various galleries in Norway and overseas in the UK, Iceland, Germany, France and the US. "During the process of painting I attempt to document physical and psychological presence, investigating and experimenting with the communicative function of colour, pattern and form and exploring how these interact. They are a combination of chance and deliberation, functioning as an experimentation and composition of mark making which create gateways into suggesting both a physical and emotional energy in the course of making the work. The starting point of each painting is inspired from a wide area of landscapes, architecture and interiors which will inform the course of painting. I believe that art has the ability to communicate and transform and I look at my work and process as a personal expression of the unconscious, dreams and the immediate emotional. Using mark making to create rhythm, I often use a variation of bold colours to build my paintings. Creating abstract shapes and patterns attempting to make an ambiguous space. The image is then worked and re-worked until the image is “found”. Only when a balance and integration is achieved I feel that the painting is finished.
