ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This new painting features a bouquet of blue anemone blossoms in a New York Coffee cup. The vibrant red-orange background and blue flowers provides a joyful pop of color. While the pop art vibes allow for the floral still life--quite the traditional genre and subject-- to feel contemporary and fun. This is a new piece in a recent series I have been working on that celebrates the delightful cultural icons that emerge through immigration to the US. So many cities offer remarkable examples of these encounters, this felt like the right little tribute for NYC. The painting has my customary fauvist coloring and Modernist ode to Matisse feel, while nodding towards the city's Warhol and Pop Art history. Per Wikipedia, the Anthora cup was originally designed by Leslie Buck of the Sherri Cup Company in 1963 to appeal to Greek-owned coffee shops in New York City, and was later much copied by other companies. The name is said to come from Buck's Eastern European-accented pronunciation of the word Amphora.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
