Whether the artwork is a realistic portrait, a scribbled portrait, a video of puppets, or a completely abstract painting, I am always representing reality or realism. In all art, the truth of emotion matters most. That is what is real, on a deeper level than what the eye can only see in day-to-day life. For example, violently scribbling with oil pastels allows me to connect with primal emotions and express that reality. I always want to go deeper; reality is an emotion or expression detached from conformity or social expectations. Representing those emotions through scribbles, exaggerated or muted colors, or deformed figures, is a metaphor that connects to that deeper reality.
