ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the Bauhaus movement and Mid-Century design, the Circles Series is an experimental study of the relationships between one, two or at most, three colors. It is a distinctive visual branch of knowledge characterized by geometric abstraction and an expressive application of paint. Some of the paintings feature colored shapes and forms that travel around the canvas, creating the illusion of infinite space. Bazinet employs geometric and minimal color combinations to create unique and seductive paintings.

Sylvain Bazinet was born in Montreal, Canada and has lived and worked in New York City for most of his life. He received his BFA in Art and Design from Parsons School of Design and continued his education in Computer-Aided Design at Pratt Institute. Bazinet’s latest paintings is inspired by the Bauhaus movement and Mid-Century design, the Elements Series is an experimental study of the relationships between one, two or at most, three colors. It is a distinctive visual branch of knowledge characterized by geometric abstraction and an expressive application of paint. Some of the paintings feature colored shapes and forms that travel around the edge of the canvas, creating the illusion of infinite space. Bazinet employs geometric and minimal color combinations to create unique and seductive paintings. Phillis Braff, a critic from the Sunday New York Times, praised Bazinet’s work, saying, “Mr. Bazinet pieces make a particularly strong impact, a regimented cluster of panel paintings, each with its own independent image or pattern. Occasionally there are recognizable references to details of the natural world. The assembly generates a smart dialogue between its units, contrasts randomness and structure, and questions the line separating reality and crafted object.”
