Critic: Ewa Herniczek What lies behind the horizon? About Mikolaj Obrycki's paintings Echoes of the classics sound in Mikolaj Obrycki's paintings. From single objects similar to Monett's, blue figures of Picasso and his Harlequins, through synthetic landscapes of Nicolas de Stael, compositions of T.P. Potworowski and simple scenes of Jozef Czapski - all of these motives and forms that state a direct connection with these great predecessors appear in Mikolaj's works. We cannot, however, put his works into plain comparison with the classics of the kind. We can find a specific liberal attitude - most clearly seen in "Birds" and "Friends", or in the animal motives and bar scenes - a frequent topic of his works. The other side of his works can be seen in his landscapes, in which synthetically treated form and radically simple compositions seem to reflect the inspirations coming from the far eastern paintings. The simplicity of the form comes with the aware, and often very sublime, usage of paint that contributes to the expression of these synthetically treated forms. Color sensitivity and very good technique are no doubt his attributes. A chronological review of Mikolaj Obrycki's works shows the evolution of painting forms and techniques used by him, from expressive, spontaneous , sometimes even extravagant solutions, through aware reduction of means of expression, up to more intentionally built compositions in which form, color and light merge to create a clear expression.

Mikolaj Obrycki was born in Szczecin. From 1997 to 2003 he studied painting, graphics and sculpture at Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. He gained his degree in painting in the art studio of professor Jerzy Kalucki. He had started to exhibit his works long before he commenced his education at the Academy. The first exhibition of his paintings was held in his hometown, Szczecin, in 1994. Obrycki’s paintings, no matter if figurative or abstract are always unrestrained and free in their way of presenting the subject. His paintings inspired by music deserve special attention. It might be this particular combination of the painter’s talent and musical education the Author has gained that helps to convey his message with aid of minimal means and suggestive music. He is one of the most talented painters of young generation. MOKO CITY June 28, 2013, Warsaw Frantic and mysterious areas of the city of Moko. Its beautiful lakes becoming one and then splitting suddenly, with their bottoms reaching the very ends of the universe. And the roads there, some - just streams of fire and rubber, motion apprehended in a single frame; other – organic shapes flying like crazy, thousands of suns, unidentified celestial objects in the hyperspace. Remains of civilizations lost in time, adorned with lightning discharges, sunk in Utopia! And the air filling the space at the intersections of the micro- and macroworlds, emitting light in the most unseen colours! And all this because light is a medium that space is made and unmade by. Nothing is rooted in the void, take it for a fact. The world we know, one we are used to locate on the edge of the universe in our wildest fantasies, is always contextualized. That edge is hard to discern, which explains why I often experience difficulties trying to differentiate between the things I see. Sitting down by the banks of the Vistula river I come to think that sometimes watching is all I've got. I’m staring at the ever-changing slimy water surface, and that’s all I need now. The colours of ships passing by, a balloon high above in the air, the skies. It’s all right here. None of it is present in my studio, but it can be recreated there. Sometimes it might seem that recreating that space on a piece of canvas gives you the exact same impression you have while sitting by the river bank.
