I've never been interested in working towards a consistent style but have always been interested in abstraction with meaning. I’ve wondered how this could be achieved without losing the direct experience of colour and form. I’ve also always loved making “stuff” by hand and figuring out how to do things ---from detailed traditional womens’ work to huge columns of clay and cement as installations. I've used chance in various ways to achieve this. In this series the forms are also arrived at through strategies of chance. After randomly dripping house paint onto the floor and then finding images within the splatters,I photograph, copy, and reproduce these forms in acrylic sheets through laser cutting, and grow them into patterns. This creates a perceptual ambiguity where figure and ground can flip back and forth and along with the title can, especially for those viewers touched with a sense of humor, become open to an endless number of interpretations. From the outset my work has been committed to a feminist perspective. All conceptual queries reflect concerns of continuing social significance such as the often missing voice of women in society and more specifically women’s cultural production and the binary polarities of thought that dominate our current social, cultural and political discourses. I have sought to articulate these issues in a visual language that engages viewers and invites them to question their perceptual and intellectual assumptions.
