About The Artwork

This painting took about 100 hours to complete and is part of a series I am working on about our own cultural history and spiritual roots. The story of Boudicca, as described by a Roman onlooker Tacitus, tells that she released a hare from the folds of her cloak in an act of divination before a great battle. The outcome of the battle would depend upon the direction that the hare took. She invoked Andraste –the ancient British battle goddess. Boudicca was chosen as battle queen by the tribes and as such she personified Andraste. She raised the hosts of Britain to vanquish the Romans who had raped her young daughters and had had her publically flogged. She is a symbol of great female power. The Roman observer describes her as wearing a multicoloured tunic and having piercing eyes, a long mane of tawny hair and wearing a golden torc around her neck which in ancient times denoted royalty, but also servitude to the people as it is difficult to remove. I have used a part of the speech that Boudicca made before battle around the canvas - You may choose to die as slaves but…“I, a woman, am resolved to win or die”. I have painted her warriors in the distance and also “Raven Queen” and “Sovereignty” around her as Boudicca also personifies these titles.

I am an artist living and working amidst the Pennines. I am inspired by nature, light, dreams, figures, faces, ancient history, beliefs and folklore. I work primarily as a painter in acrylics for their jewel-like colour, flexibility and quick drying time. Paintings can take me between three weeks to six months to complete as I work in many layers of colour and meaning. Paintings are windows onto Soulscapes. Art is freedom.
