ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Right part of a diptych | Although it looks fun, it’s all part of spring! As the females come into season, the males take more and more interest, following them closely until ready to mate. This is known as ‘mate guarding’, it’s essentially the male making sure a rival doesn’t steal his girl away. But if he gets too close, fur will fly as she gives him a punch Mike Tyson would be proud of! The larger male hopefully gets the message and bides his time.

Suzanne van Hal started her artistic career as a graphic designer and interior stylist and during these days she was one admired commercial artist in the Netherlands. Her work was used to great effect to advertise and promote several of Holland’s most well known interior brands. She was also well known for her distinguishing and characteristic mural paintings in discotheques and up-scale homes. A few years ago she decided to move into the contemporary art world. Her style of illustration was already quite loose and painterly which meant that fine art buyers could relate more to her work as ‘art’ rather than illustration which normally tends to be tighter in style. Also, having worked in the interior business she had developed a great sense of how art should fit in with the rest of the interior design plans, and how to exhibit the art to the best effect in a home. The choice of her complimenting colours are made by her great sense of style and her developed eye to foresee upcoming trends in the interior world. Her paintings and characters evolve in the spontaneity of the moment of the brush and the paint on the canvas. In her artwork she strives not only for the quality of the composition, but also for the essence and flair of the character. She pics her characters and subjects not just randomly, they have to portray their symbolic nature. Featuring mainly ‚eatable animals’ like lobster, fish, hares, but also birds in her typically humorous distinguished no-nonsense way; warm, contrasting and somewhat brighter colors add to a sociable atmosphere. With this unique combination their appearance create a spontaneous sense of familiarity in a home.
