Roy McBride: So many times in my life I screwed up: I've talked when I should've listened, I've been harsh when I should've been tender.

Roy McBride: Here we go again. Fighting for resources. What the hell am I doing here?

Roy McBride: I am focused only on the essential, to the exclusion of all else.I will make only pragmatic decisions. I will not allow myself to be distracted. I will not allow my mind to linger on that which is unimportant. I will not rely on anyone or anything. I will not be vulnerable to mistakes.

Roy McBride: A self-destructive side. That's what she used to say to me. I should feel something.

Roy McBride: He captured strange and distant worlds in greater detail than ever before. They were beautiful, magnificent... full of awe and wonder. But beneath their sublime surfaces... there was nothing. No love or hate. No light or dark. He could only see what was not there... and missed what was right in front of him.

Roy McBride: Most of us spend our entire lives in hiding.

Roy McBride: Why go on? Why keep trying?

Thomas Pruitt: And I came to the realization out there, that a voyage of exploration can be used for something as simple as escape. I'm telling you this, Roy, because we have to hold out the possibility that your father may be hiding from us.

from ‘Ad Astra’ (2019) Starring Brad 'cuz' Pitt (Legends of the Fall), Liv Tyler (The Incredible Hulk), Donald Sutherland (The Dirty Dozen), and Tommy Lee Jones (Under Siege). Written and Directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z).

Ad Astra (Latin for "To the Stars") is a 2019 American psychological science fiction drama film produced, co-written, and directed by James Gray. Starring Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland, it follows an astronaut who ventures into space in search of his lost father, whose obsession at all costs to find intelligent alien life threatens the solar system and all life on the earth; ironically, he threatens to destroy exactly what he is looking for in the universe: sentient life. The plot and narration bear a strong resemblance to Apocalypse Now, itself an adaptation of the Joseph Conrad novella Heart of Darkness.

The project was announced in early 2016, with Gray saying he wanted to feature "the most realistic depiction of space travel that's been put in a movie". Pitt signed on to star in April 2017 and the rest of the cast joined later that year. Filming began around Los Angeles that August, lasting through October.

Ad Astra premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 20, 2019, by 20th Century Fox. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for Pitt's performance, Gray's direction, visual effects, and the cinematography. However, the film was a box office bomb, grossing $135 million worldwide against an $80–100 million budget. At the 92nd Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Sound Mixing.

I’m (I am?) a self-taught artist, originally from the north suburbs of Chicago (also known as John Hughes' America). Born in 1984, I started painting in 2017 and began to take it somewhat seriously in 2019. I currently reside in rural Montana and live a secluded life with my three dogs - Pebbles (a.k.a. Jaws, Brandy, Fang), Bam Bam (a.k.a. Scrat, Dinki-Di, Trash Panda, Dug), and Mystique (a.k.a. Lady), and five cats - Burglekutt (a.k.a. Ghostmouse Makah), Vohnkar! (a.k.a. Storm Shadow, Grogu), Falkor (a.k.a. Moro, The Mummy's Kryptonite, Wendigo, BFC), Nibbler (a.k.a. Cobblepot), and Meegosh (a.k.a. Lenny). Part of the preface to the 'Complete Works of Emily Dickinson helps sum me up as a person and an artist: "The verses of Emily Dickinson belong emphatically to what Emerson long since called ‘the Poetry of the Portfolio,’ something produced absolutely without the thought of publication, and solely by way of expression of the writer's own mind. Such verse must inevitably forfeit whatever advantage lies in the discipline of public criticism and the enforced conformity to accepted ways. On the other hand, it may often gain something through the habit of freedom and unconventional utterance of daring thoughts. In the case of the present author, there was no choice in the matter; she must write thus, or not at all. A recluse by temperament and habit, literally spending years without settling her foot beyond the doorstep, and many more years during which her walks were strictly limited to her father's grounds, she habitually concealed her mind, like her person, from all but a few friends; and it was with great difficulty that she was persuaded to print during her lifetime, three or four poems. Yet she wrote verses in great abundance; and though brought curiosity indifferent to all conventional rules, had yet a rigorous literary standard of her own, and often altered a word many times to suit an ear which had its own tenacious fastidiousness." -Thomas Wentworth Higginson "Not bad... you say this is your first lesson?" "Yes, but my father was an *art collector*, so…"
