About The Artwork

Feeling imprisoned in my own body throughout a period of chronic illness it followed that my mind, as a form of self preservation ‘stagnated’. The mind, previously muffled in it’s state of hibernation was immune from emotion, and the embers of the soul lay dormant in wait of ignition. Finally, no longer inert, the mind and soul awaken with an unquenchable desire for feeling and experience. Across an expanse of deceptively simple minimal colour, depth is provided as much through the selective removal of layers as from the application of multiple layers of mixed media. Inspired partly by Japanese aesthetics with it’s recognition of the beauty of unobtrusiveness, that apparent simplicity becomes a space of potentiality. Having previously restored ornate picture frames as a profession, I’d developed an appreciation of the qualities of some of the materials used. One such material, traditional gesso provides a wealth of textural possibilities. The painting is on appropriately primed MDF board, with no hanging hardware on reverse. The painting is signed on the front and back. The nature of chronic illness is such that often those that suffer with it are ashamed to speak about it, even with loved ones, and those that live with sufferers are confused by it. Having lived with M.E and fibromyalgia for over 10yrs, my strategy for dealing with the frustration was to go into a sort of state of 'hibernation'. However, eventually I discovered painting as a form of expressing those associated emotions. One of the most satisfying responses to my work from others is their recognition that the paintings somehow also reflect their own experiences of illness (mental or physical). I have had some emotional exchanges with people who feel relieved to share what they ordinarily feel to be a taboo subject.

A self taught abstract painter born in Norfolk in 1970, now living and working in Middlesex, I create works in a variety of media, mainly acrylics and gesso to create atmospheric and deceptively understated pieces. I started abstract painting during a long period of chronic ill health as it provided comfort. Feeling imprisoned in my own body, it followed that my mind, perhaps as a form of  self-preservation 'hibernated', and abstract art became the obvious and indeed only form of self expression. The addition (and removal) of multiple layers of mixed media over a large expanse of board offer overall depth. Emerging delicately from that expanse are textured details evoking fresh possibilities to challenge the stability of hibernation. Occasionally, textured areas, sometimes in gold leaf, give an overriding sense of understated optimism. Inspired partly by Japanese aesthetics, the beauty of simplicity also proved calming during those years of illness, where the ‘void’ of an apparent simple block of colour becomes a space of potentiality and hope. Having previously worked as a picture frame restorer I developed an appreciation of the qualities of some of the traditional materials used in that field. Incorporating them in many of my paintings they help to provide depth and texture.
