"Breast thermogram A with high gloss silver cutouts" 1975 Painting

The aesthetics of breast thermograms as an incentive to fuse art and technology. The Art&Technology concept of the Los Angeles County Museum motivated me in 1975 to draw, paint and silkscreen female torsos based on infrared breast thermograms. The A&T program, a pioneering exploration by the L.A. County Museum, linked artists in the seventies with high tech companies. In nature form is function. Just like nature technology embodies aesthetics, magic and mystery. The artist is expected to tie it all together, to visualize the whole picture and to reveal how technology affects and changes us. Infrared breast thermography registers skin temperature differences of the female torso to detect tumors. Unusually high skin temperatures indicate a tumor to be discarded or confirmed with a biopsy. By drawing, painting and silk-screening breast thermograms I tried to celebrate the female form based on images made with an infrared camera as a diagnostic tool.
