About The Artwork

I did an oil sketch and worked from a photograph of this place in London looking underneath a Bridge because of the use of perspective in the photo. There are more than one perspetive lines, which represent different sections. These sections allows the whole compostion to interplay with these perpsective lines.

Thomas Hurley CV Thomas Hurley. 21/01/1985. Place of birth: Hammersmith. Practicing artist with solo studio currently lives in Ashtead, Surrey. Summary Artist Statement. I am a landscape painter with emphases to light and tone. I begin a piece by using other materials such as sponges, jay cloths and rip paper of canvas to create more accidental mark making to accurately record unusual light sources. I consider my work to be Romantic because I am influenced by other landscape painters, such as J.M.W Turner, Thomas Girtin and John Constable, Peter Doig, and John Virtue. I sketch outdoors and bring my watercolours and photographs back to the studio. I've been to places such as Mauritius, Africa and New York to gain an understanding on light interpretation. I look at the landscape both realistic and abstract depending on what feeling I have about the place. I like dark scenes because of the tonal variations, which I use restricted colour palettes to represent light. I think dark paintings are more direct and more immediate response to nature.
