About The Artwork

Bullitt - sneak peak. (Almost finished...see text below...) I am old enough to remember seeing Steve McQueen in Bullitt on (black and white) TV. Possibly more violent than I should have been allowed to watch at that age, but extremely exciting. I think that movie defined car chases. The Mustang against the black beast from Dodge. For this painting I knew I wanted to create a likeness to that Mustang but somehow pour as much of that painting as possible, while maintaining a likeness. So I guess the aim is a bit of recognizable abstraction (recab). The painting was done in stages with drying required between. The first was the dirt the car was riding on. A pure pour, left to drip off the end. After stage 1, I was happy with the start. Stage 2 was squirting out the outlines of the mustang. I believe I did a quick freehand pencil sketch and then got to it. Stage 3 and 4 were duplicates of 2, since the volume diminished more than I wanted. The plan was to pour into the mold created by the paint outlines. Stage 5 was progressed into, after I was happy with the line volumes. Oh yah, forgot to mention, I knew very early that I wanted to portray speed and one way of doing that was to fade/drip the right hand side of where the car had been… and maybe even the car! (or so I hoped) I sprayed water, at times, onto key point on the painting, to help accelerate the dripping effect. I intended to drip the green in but wasn’t happy with the result so I ended up using a paintbrush and then spraying with water for more drip effect. The 6th stage was adding the wind-stream/wind-tunnel air flow touches.. I knew I wanted light colours and colourful. I wanted again to pour something, so I pre-wet air paths with water and dripped ink, into the paths. I liked the result but not enough to leave it alone. At the risk of wrecking everything, i took pictures of this stage to possibly use as an “iteration” for a print. The next stage was to go darker with the “wind” and add ink induced flows, on top of the water colours, but following the same contours. I liked the result since, I felt the dark focused the light, which focused the car. So only finishing touches remain…I am thinking a bit of refinement in front of the car, possibly narrowing the light areas…still not 100 % sure on this…. more soon.

Art to me, is just a subset of the rest of life. A balancing act between working hard and challenging yourself and having fun with the outcomes. Art usually reveals the inner workings of the artist. For me I have quite a wide range of interests and subject matter that I want to “cover”. I like experimenting with mediums, and even pushing the boundaries a bit. But I also like to go back to basics and compare myself to other classics, to gauge my abilities. I LOVE art, because of the mysterious way it moves us and evokes all sorts of emotions. I love trying to find that magical element that turns an abstract into something we like. Why do we like it? Why do we like those colours? Why do our tastes differ? Solving and manipulating these dilemma's is part of the fun. What makes a great painting of nature. I think the answer to these questions is elusive and changes with time. My tastes in art have refined since I have become an artist, and started to ask questions... My art represents my interests. So my subjects are the "usual ones", but maybe with a focus on nature, sports, and movement. This is evolving (with my push into abstracts), and I am not sure where it will lead, but that is the fun part…. I hope the viewers enjoy and maybe even support my efforts. Thank you for viewing.
