The upward swirl of butterflies embodies energy, vitality, positivity, and joy. The butterflies are set to a background of deep crimson red with delicate leaf details in gold. Lily aims for her color palettes to be strong and vibrant without being garish.

Lily has developed a unique way of working, using her own paintings as collage material on a canvas. Butterflies are meticulously painted, reproduced, and cut, ready to use on a canvas. The background is painted with acrylics. The use of collage allows the freedom to play with the composition in a way which would otherwise be impossible, allowing quick changes until a design is settled upon. When the butterflies are fixed in place, washes of ink have been applied. Finally, a glossy varnish enhances color, adds protection, and offers an opulent shine.

Please be aware that this canvas has a high gloss finish which cannot be easily portrayed via photography, and some surface texture/relief as a result of the layered collage material.

Nature is common to all of Lily's work, however she would never claim to offer gritty realism. Lily describes it more like focusing on an aspect of its beauty and running with it, seeing where it can be taken. Simplicity is key, which to Lily means creating something which people can hopefully take some pleasure and enjoyment from.

Canvas stretched on a wooden frame. Deep edge canvas with painted sides - no framing necessary. Ready to hang.

Please note, packaging for shipping is described as 'cardboard box'. We would like to add that this will include very thick polystyrene either side of the canvas, which offers excellent yet lightweight protection.

Lily has been painting professionally since 2006, exhibiting widely throughout the UK during that time, and now features in collections worldwide - including Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Australia. Lily exhibited overseas for the first time in 2012, with two shows in Barcelona, and one in Amsterdam. She now works from her studio on a sheep farm in Cumbria, just to the north of the Lake District. Lily's work reflects a love of nature. Her original paintings are often inspired by multitudes in nature (flocks, shoals, gatherings...) and the flow of that multitude, in glorified representations. Lily’s paintings usually employ an element of collage material, however rather than found material, Lily uses paper copies of her own painting or printmaking studies. Koi fish, for example, are meticulously hand-painted, then reproduced, cut, and arranged in a composition on the canvas. Washes of inks are applied, and sometimes additional painted or drawn details, before a clear gloss varnish secures the work and adds an opulent lustre. Work is often oriental in style; Lily is greatly influenced by the colours and aesthetics of eighteenth century printmakers such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, and Japanese kimono design. Lily is interested in finding out what it takes to create an appealing aesthetic - how to create a 'flow' and an energy. For Lily this means a search for balance and beauty. Overall her aims are simple – to create something the viewer can take enjoyment from. Lily is happy to discuss commissioned pieces.
