The upward swirl of butterflies embodies energy, vitality, positivity, and joy. The butterflies are set to a background of natural ochres, raw umber, and touches of sunshine yellow, overlaid with washes of burnt sienna and nut brown inks. The color palettes are designed to be warm and bold without being garish. Lily has developed a unique way of working, using reproductions of her own paintings as collage material on a canvas. The butterflies are meticulously painted, reproduced, and cut, ready to use on the canvas. The background is painted with acrylics. The use of collage allows the freedom to play with the composition in a way which would otherwise be impossible, allowing quick changes until a design is settled upon. When the butterfly collage is fixed in place, washes of ink have been applied. Finally, a glossy varnish enhances color, adds protection, and offers an opulent shine. Nature is common to all of Lily's work, however she would never claim to offer gritty realism. Lily describes it more like focusing on an aspect of its beauty and running with it, seeing where it can be taken. Simplicity is key, which to Lily means creating something which people can hopefully take some pleasure and enjoyment from. The canvas is stretched on a deep edge wooden frame with painted sides. Included is a made to measure floating frame, which is easy to remove if preferred. The frame is finished with Littlefair's water based non-toxic water stain in 'English Oak'. Ready to hang. Please be aware that this canvas has a gloss finish, and some surface texture/relief as a result of the layered collage material and varnish. This has been portrayed as fully as possible through the additional photos. Framed dimensions: 37.8 x 61.8 x 2 inches Unframed dimensions: 36 x 60 x 1.5 inches

Lily has been painting professionally since 2006, exhibiting widely throughout the UK during that time, and now features in collections worldwide - including Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Australia. Lily exhibited overseas for the first time in 2012, with two shows in Barcelona, and one in Amsterdam. She now works from her home studio in Cumbria, just to the north of the Lake District. Lily's work reflects a love of nature, instilled from an early age. Original paintings are inspired by multitude in nature (flocks, shoals, gatherings...) and the flow of that multitude, in glorified representations. Lily’s paintings usually employ an element of collage material, however rather than found material, Lily uses paper copies of her own painting studies. For example, butterflies are meticulously hand-painted, then reproduced, cut, and arranged in a composition on the canvas. Washes of inks are applied, and sometimes additional painted or drawn details, before a clear gloss varnish secures the work and adds an opulent lustre. Work is often oriental in style; Lily is greatly influenced by eighteenth century printmakers such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, and Japanese kimono design. Lily is interested in finding out what it takes to create an appealing aesthetic - how to create a 'flow' and an energy. For Lily this involves striking a balance between presence and absence, dark and light, one colour next to another, symmetry and asymmetry, adding and taking away until something is 'right'. Lily would be happy to discuss commissioned pieces.
