About the Artist

Frank Willems

Netherlands

Frank Willems creates art driven by curiosity, wonder, and a healthy sense of restlessness. Fascinated by human and animal behaviour, the complexity of the human psyche, social discomforts, and the absurdity of everyday life, he explores the world around him through a visual language that is constantly evolving.

His style is an eclectic blend of urban art, pop art, and neo-expressionism, where humour and seriousness, chaos and structure, reality and absurdity coexist. Willems works intuitively and spontaneously, driven by an unrelenting work ethic and a constant desire to explore beyond the obvious. Music is a continuous influence throughout his creative process.

Interaction and movement have become an important part of Willems' artistic practice. His interactive artworks invite viewers to become active participants rather than passive observers. Some works reveal an entirely different layer under blacklight, while others incorporate following eyes, kinetic movement, mirrors, or movable elements. A pair of eyes may appear to follow you across the room, an element may move when touched, or something hidden may only become visible from a different perspective. Without relying on complex technology, Willems creates unexpected ways for an artwork to change, respond, and invite discovery.

Many of his works are created on reclaimed wood. Old tables, cabinets, planks, and other discarded wooden materials are given a second life and transformed into artworks. Their imperfections, marks, textures, and history become part of the work itself. What others might see as waste, Willems sees as an opportunity to create something new, demonstrating that beauty, value, and creativity can emerge where others see only an ending.

Upon these weathered surfaces emerges an expressive visual language filled with animals, cartoon-like figures, text, and skeletons. The skeletons do not symbolize death, but rather what connects us all. Whether human or animal, rich or poor, confident or insecure—we are all built from the same framework.

Text plays both a conceptual and visual role. Willems' signature reversed letter "e" and crossed-out words regularly appear as subtle disruptions, inviting viewers to look beyond their first impression.

Beneath the colourful, playful, and sometimes absurd imagery lies a deeper layer.
