Fragment of an altar stone from the Isle of Man. Found around 1700 AD. One of the Isle of Mans most important artifacts. This slate carving would have formed the central part of the front of an altar and dates to around 800 AD. It is not known what happened to the other stones. Possibly the style of carving is influenced by Irish or Mediterranean religious art. The colour was added by myself and is not based on any archaeological evidence.
