I love texture. As a potter and as a painter texture has always been a large part of my creativity. This collection is devoted exclusively to that quality of my work. As well as watercolors, I use modeling paste, specialty paper, matte and glossy gels, and sand as well as gesso to give the work depth and to create lots of interest for the eyes of the viewer. These pieces are not shown off well as images. They do best when seen “live.” The complexity of the texture along with the interplay of the different gels and paints creates a changing pattern that shifts as the piece is viewed from different angles and in different light. It will change in the morning light as it will again in the light of the afternoon and evening. You will see it differently up close and at a distance. And it will once again show you something else when looked at from an angle. These are “living” pieces that continue to offer the viewer new information and to give new experiences as well as new areas of interest with each viewing. The media are watercolor, modeling paste, tissue paper and ink. I used Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Vellum Paper 100 lb and the originals are 12 x 18 inches. What I am exploring lately is collaging faces using a wide variety of mediums. I work on the "edge," taking the two-dimensional format and expanding it or pushing its limits and playing with people's expectations of those limits. I mount the collage onto foam board leaving a border that creates a frame. This frame is then incorporated into the artwork itself. The frame is not something that is added later, is external to and "confines" the piece. My aim is to create a piece of art that remains open to the viewer to fully enjoy the texture and to continue to be witness to the steps in the creative process. The work remains a part of the living world, organic and not sealed and set inside a time capsule.

Always an artist in various media, I began painting late in life and have little regard for rules in the creative process. Art represents freedom. I am for the most part untrained and strive to preserve my own artistic vision. Texture is my passion, but I enjoy experimenting with lines, repetition, and layering. My art spans a wide variety of subjects and techniques. That's what keeps me fresh. Occasionally, I become very involved in color, but I am also at home playing with only shadow and light. My Work has been shown in galleries, appeared in magazines, and is in the homes of art collectors around the world. I can be reached at joyce@jabsart.com @handle → @jabsartdc
