About The Artwork

Cool complimentary colors in an abstract grid represent order. Noncompliant lines and shapes argue that point. Despite this, they coexist here in this painting, as well as in life. Peacefully coexist? Well, that's a discussion for another time. The colors in this piece consist of high flow and heavy acrylics, applied mostly with wet rags, fingers and the occasional brush. Straight lines applied with graphite, charcoal and paint, roughed up of course with fingers and brayers. The overlaid black lines and shapes are black acrylic applied with a bottle and worked appropriately for the desired effect.

"Predictably unpredictable" describes my process. Using mostly brayers to apply and manipulate acrylics, the outcome is often somewhat unexpected, and the discovery factor is high. I have an idea of what will occur when I put paint to canvas, but not an exact one. My process is one of discovery and exploration, continually experimenting with color, texture and underpainting, with a healthy dose of “what happens if”. In addition to brayers, I use rags, fingers, palette knives, squirt bottles and the occasional brush, graphite and marker. The primary focus with most of my work is the affect humans have on the natural world. In the bulk of my paintings, the natural world is represented by color. Man's footprint appears as black lines, marks and shapes. The viewer determines if our imprint is a positive or negative one.
