About The Artwork

Christ Church in Spitalfields was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and built between 1714 and 1729. Situated on Commercial Street it was one of the first and arguably one of the finest of the so-called "Commissioners' Churches" built for the Commission for Building Fifty New Churches, which had been established by an Act of Parliament in 1711. The west front is represented as a complex but powerful architectural symbol. The building starts off as a rectangle on its lower levels and then continues to taper upward, culminating in the magnificent spire. Through the disciplined use of a reduced palette, a subtle bending of perspective and tight but expressive brush work, the painting creates a likeness that is both visually representative and simultaneously allegorical.

James Cooper is a London based artist born in 1971. He completed a pre-degree in Fine Art at the Kensington and Chelsea College, and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art painting at Hornsey College of Art. After five years of service he left the armed forces, and was the co-owner of the highly acclaimed Windmill restaurant in Fulham. It was here where he had his first studio, and used the venue as a platform to launch his own paintings, as well as curate group and solo exhibitions for other artists. Over the last twenty years James Cooper’s painting processes have continued to evolve and mature. His sources of inspiration remain both diverse and eclectic. The latest collection of work provides an exciting opportunity to explore this development through images of urban scenes. He uses traditional oil painting techniques in a modern style that allows him to express his distinctive perspective on contemporary life in an exciting and unusual manner. Work is commissioned in addition to being held in institutional, private, and corporate collections both in the UK and worldwide, and has been displayed in numerous exhibitions. Cooper has subsequently lived and painted in New York, Cuba, Ireland, and India in addition to various other countries.
