Cirriculum Vitae: Berlin Painting

Having been stationed in West Germany as a US Army officer during the final days of the Cold War, I have always been inspired by that time period. My fondness for Germany has transcended into an artistic influence where I try to articulate pieces of its history through painting. This particular work incorporates visual references from the Berlin Wall: the picture plane has been broken down into rectangular sections echoing the sectional construction of the actual wall. The squiggly black lines make reference to graffiti that covered the actual wall. The date timeline was influenced by a real piece of graffiti that marked the wall that as attempt to portray a timeline. The final element is an actual East German 5-mark note incorporated into the actual painting. The empty rectangle on its right was meant to suggest its absence of value.
