City In the Sky Painting

Futuristic and fantasy architecture has always fascinated me. Architecture school opened my mind to great artists such as Piranesi, and visionary architects such as Ledoux. The promise of creating my own imaginary spaces became the right vehicle to express my passion for architecture.In this painting, I wanted to experiment with adding on layer by layer of depth, increasing perspective as I went. I experimented with layers of translucent walls and those that were more opaque. I hoped to create different visual experiences with the unique layering. The thick cold pressed 300lb water colour paper is a perfect surface to experiment with the absorption of different paints. It is like a sponge, naturally diffusing the colours with interesting effects.
