"Cold Contours" Painting

Lina Syu is a contemporary painter whose work bridges traditional Japanese painting (Nihonga) and contemporary visual expression, exploring spirituality, nature, and the psychological resonance of the landscape. Her paintings embody a dialogue between the visible and the invisible, blending meditative stillness with a refined sense of materiality.
From 2016 to 2019, she worked as an artist assistant in Songzhuang, Beijing, one of China’s most vibrant art districts known for its concentration of experimental painters and avant-garde studios. During this period, she participated in several ink painting exhibitions, laying the foundations for her visual language, which was rooted in East Asian brush traditions.
In 2020, she moved to Japan to pursue formal training in Japanese painting (Nihonga) at the Musashino Art University, one of the country’s leading art institutions. There, she studied under renowned Nihonga masters and participated in numerous painting exhibitions in Japan, which helped her refine her understanding of natural pigments, mineral colors, and layered compositional techniques. Her growing expertise earned her the Museum Curator Qualification in March 2025, certified by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, recognizing her ability to bridge artistic practice with curatorial and cultural management.
In 2023, Syu was admitted to the Master’s program in Nihonga, further advancing her artistic practice. Her graduate studies have allowed her to explore the intersection of traditional painting disciplines and contemporary experimentation, incorporating techniques such as mixed-media layering, gold leaf application, and conceptual minimalism. Her works have been selected for major national exhibitions across Japan, where critics have noted her sensitivity to color gradation, light, and atmospheric rhythm.
Syu’s artistic philosophy is profoundly influenced by animism and Asian spirituality—beliefs that view all forms of nature as alive with invisible energy. In her landscapes, mountains, rivers, and drifting clouds are not static motifs but living presences, echoing human emotions and spiritual states. Her paintings often depict subtle transitions between clarity and obscurity, fullness and emptiness, evoking the Japanese notion of “ma”—the meaningful space between forms.
As both an artist and emerging scholar, her cross-cultural experience between China and Japan gives her a distinctive perspective.
