Coloring outside of the lines Painting

My form of art has always had structure due to the lack of creativity bestowed on my household, lead by a militant father. My parents are not artists so they could not understand that my art was a form of expression and not just a picture. So they would tell me things like "You should be drawing people that can be recognized and not things you have made up. You should color in the lines." And that is exactly what I did for the next 12 years. The statue of David is one of the most recognizable pieces of art to this day, and I have always been inspired by it. Originally this piece was going to be done in realism, but while sketching the layout I looked at a family walking past. A mother, father, and two children. They had just gotten ice cream. The first child had a flavor that seemed to be chocolate, and the other child had 3 different flavors that he mixed together. His mother kept asking him why he always mixes a bunch of different flavors instead of just getting one. he looked down at his ice cream and respond, "because, I already know how those taste." This made me think about how my parents unknowingly boxed in my creativity and how I wish I could have come up with that response to give to my parents. This piece was done in a free-flowing watercolor style using as little lines as possible. The colors used are the three colors of the ice cream the young boy had mixed together.
