Inspired by the brilliant blues of the town of Chefchaouen, in Morocco's Riff Mountains. It is thought that the town was painted blue by Jews fleeing persecution in WW2 - blue was painted on the walls, floors and steps as a religious practise, to represent the colour of the sky and connect the city to heaven and God. The practise continues today, and gives the feeling you are floating through an other-worldly place. Lose yourself in the cool shadows, imagine what lies beyond the quaint doorways and let the colours soothe your soul. The artwork is shipped along with a copy of the following poem: Yellow stars on our arms, on our doors, White knuckles clenched in fear, Orange flames burning ever closer, Red and black swastikas advancing. We fled For our lives, To the winding alleys Of this strange mountain town. We painted For our souls, These walls, These doors, This ground, We painted it blue. As many shades of blue As the changing sky, As many different hues As there are versions of G-d. We breathe again, Soothed By the colours of sanctuary, Cradled In the colours of Heaven.

I am originally from Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, and have a diverse creative background spanning professional work as a musician, designer, artist and educator. As an artist, my work is broadly focused on people and place. Inspiration comes from travels in the Middle East and North Africa, plus my longstanding interest in conflict and peacebuilding. My mixed media approach uses collage, acrylics, ink and chalk pastels and fuses realistic and abstract elements to suggest the history and stories that lie beneath the surface of a place.
