I began the Companion series to make a grouping with the original painting I created called Perpetual Coral. I isolated the brushstroke to develop an abstract composition using gesture and white over a colored ground. In this case I started with a sap green and iridescent blue undercoat. The color green symbolizes "terra firma" and the ground we rely on and take for granted as we move ourselves from one destination to another on and across it. Sometimes we come in direct contact with the earth, other times we are continually separated from the earth by material substrates. Blue on the other hand symbolizes the sky and the sea which in a visual sense, sandwich the earth in between. Companion III is a call to see through the blinding white light of distractions to attempt to reach the ground, the sea and the sky again. I was especially inspired by the monochromes of Robert Ryman.
