Composition with Black & Blue Painting

This work was created using a repeated method of layering white gesso underneath clear gesso. I start the composition with larger shapes of white, followed by three coats of clear primer. I then sand the layers and continue by building smaller shapes on top. This process is repeated over several layers until the composition is resolved. In order to get a sense of what is physically happening, the darkest values of white were the first initial shapes submerged under multiple layers of clear gesso. The work is created to engage the viewer through a visual dialogue between distilled shape, line and colour. This is feeling is deepened when the viewer is in the presence of the physical work, as the depth of layers become evident. This piece is on wood and hanging materials are provided.
