This was painted for an Energy Symposium held at St Andrews University. It was for an event called: The Art of Energy - Envisioning life with energy The aim was to artistically conceptualise the current energy predicament. Where there is a need to balance energy demand with concern about human-driven climate change. How can we make sense of the entanglement of life with energy in the past, present and future? The use of raw red and blue was deliberate not only to depict the obvious heat and cold opposites but to visualise the conflict at the heart of energy consumption. We need energy and in our drive for energy we use resources. We use resources and we worry about our future energy sources. We use resources and we worry about the damage we are doing to the global eco systems. The waves depicted in the piece are not only representations of the varying demand of energy, peaks and troughs but the various mathematical and scientific energy graphs.

Colour and flow have always fascinated me but I had not touched a canvas or paints in twenty years. I wanted to paint but I lacked the time, the opportunity and I guess the courage to do so. Until the middle of 2020 when I as with others had normality pulled from under us. And then circumstances meant I returned to the canvas. In for a penny and in for a pound, as soon as I painted I decided to show my art to others. And this is the thing, shall I stay inside this hole and be content, am I defined by what I have done so far or can I be more, am I just one thing or can I be more? Am I a painter? Maybe not. Am I an artist? Maybe not. But I am going to paint and you can see my art for yourselves.
