I'm currently working with disused surfboards which is a topical and local material to most surfing locations around the world but in particular to me as I live on the Cornish coast - a surfing hotspot in the UK. I work on boards that can no longer be surfed but I save them from landfill which is a key reason, but also their shape and the environment in which they're used is so suitable for combining them with fish imagery. It's an original concept that makes a statement - particularly if multiple images are combined to suggest a 'shoal'. It initiates conversation and thought about the marine environment in a conceptual way about how both fish and surfboard shapes are both designed to glide through water, the iridescent paint that I use is to capture and reflect light in exactly the same way that it's used naturally on a fish for camouflage and the use of plastic in the sea. If I have a complete board then it enables me to give an impression of a whole fish but also the broken nose part of a board is perfect for depicting a fish head. My husband is a fisherman and we surf as a family so everything about my art is personal to me and my family.

Cornish, marine artist marine environment, coastal, fish and surfing are key interests. Perhaps that’s the influence of her surroundings at home, her studio perched at the end of her garden overlooks the sea at Downderry in East Cornwall, Looe, bears witness to glassy, shimmering summer swells as well as intense and breath-taking winter storms. Add to that the fact that her husband spends many a day at sea – he comes from a seafaring background, landing a wealth of crab, lobster, John Dory and mackerel, to name a few. “He’s forever delivering fresh fish samples to my studio to help me with my work,” she laughs. Indeed, Claudia has only been creating marine art on this scale for the last 18 months. “My career has bobbed and weaved since leaving art college in Buckinghamshire,” she acknowledges. “My paternal line is Cornish and I was brought up here from the age of 10. Following my art foundation course in Falmouth, I moved away to study textiles. I then did a stint as a graduate trainee at Harrods in London, and worked in Italy as an au pair for a while, but it wasn’t until I returned to Cornwall on holiday in my mid 20s and met my husband Rob that I really found my feet again and rediscovered my roots.”
