Cross Grains iii Painting

Cross Grains iii was made during lockdown in London, UK. Although my studio building has been closed for the last 10 weeks, I have been lucky enough be able to continue painting from my home. For many artists, it has provided an opportunity for reflection and consideration of our practises. It has been a strange and worrying time, but I have had some wonderfully generative conversations with artists from all over the world over the last few months. I have generally been more confident with tonal painting, but have wanted to experiment with bolder use of colour. During a chat with an artist who’s use of colour I have always admired, they said ‘try to think more about value, I believe it is value that does the work and colour that takes the credit’. This really intrigued me and this has been the focus of the work I have been making during lockdown. I've tried to work with colour in way that takes chances, but it also mindful of ‘value’.
