About The Artwork

This Work was inspired by soft light coming through the window and the female form in its many transitional states of growth. The figure is crossing a threshold and I hope that viewers feel the beauty and softness in the painting's revealed moment of transition. I chose the female form as one of the most relatable forms in life. The female figure in this painting is also the everywoman- a mother, sister, wife, friend. I love to use thick strokes of acrylic paints using large brushes to give the viewer the feeling of suggestion and implication.

Gena Brodie Robbins was born in Macon, Georgia and raised in Tifton Georgia, graduating from Tift County High School in 1986. Brodie attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated with a BFA in Art Education in 1995 from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia. Shortly after graduating from college, Brodie taught in the public schools in both Georgia and Florida and continued her studies in fine art throughout the U.S. and abroad in France.  Traditional drawing and painting skills were explored and refined through artist retreats, such as La Bonne Etoile in Fontaine-Fourches, France, the Scottsdale Artists’ school in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Art Students’ League in New York City. Brodie was awarded the Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. While attending SCAD, Brodie received the New York Studio Space Scholarship held at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in N.Y., New York, and was also awarded internships at the Triangle Artist Workshop in Brooklyn and at Exit Art Gallery in New York City. Once Brodie completed internships in New York, and graduated from SCAD, she then Co-Founded and Co-Directed Hollingsworth Gallery in Palm Coast, Florida and the Southeast Coalition for Contemporary Artists. While at Hollingworth she curated international and national exhibitions highlighting such artists as Greg Fugua, Ilker Yardimski, Patrick McGrath Muniz, and Matthew Litteken. Brodie has since then taught foundation courses in Drawing and Two-Dimensional Design at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and has created portraits of Lucy Stubbs (Jamie Alexander), Christmas Moultrie (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and created other props for the feature film, “Savannah” directed by Annette Heyward-Carter. Brodie is mostly known for her large scale abstract works investigating struggle, implication, position, and the ephemeral states of time and existence. Brodie has exhibited in China, France, and the U.S. She is widely collected and has won awards such as the Florida Artist Group’s Richard Dean Andruk Award, curated by Sam Gilliam. Brodie is currently living and working as a full time artist at Brodie Studio in Suwanee, GA, and is represented by SCAD Galleries in Savannah Georgia, Tipson Creek Gallery in Clayton, Georgia and formerly, dk Gallery in Marietta GA.
