This is a painting of the renown Charlie Solomon, a first nation's Mi'kmaq medicine man of the Wabanaki confederation and friend of mine. He is depicted here waiting for a response from another drummer from across the Penobscot River. It was said, that you could stand next to Charlie while he was drumming, and if you closed your eyes he could beat the drum so that it appeared to be coming from across the river. The painting has that restful appearance and a sense of quiet. I wanted the viewer to feel apart of this man's mystique and sacred way of his ceremonies. I started out using archive glue to attach mulberry paper, rice, and bark paper onto the Arches 140 lb press watercolor paper. Then I painted a watercolor over the varied surfaces to create the desired textures I was looking for in the different surfaces of the leather, moose hide drum, the grass foreground, and the background trees. I wanted the viewer to feel the stillness of restfulness.

Short Bio: Michael E. Vermette MIchael is intrigued with the timelessness in change in his paintings. They show a love of color and light with emphasis on the expressive painterly mark and form, which evoke a recognizable feeling, a nostalgic memory, or emotional qualities such as the smell of salt and balsam in the air. Carl Little writes in Volume 30 of The Island Journal,” Michael Vermette, who emulates the vision of one of Monhegan island’s great painters of the past, James Fitzgerald (1899-1971), adds impasto oomph to iconic views” Paintings that are filled with a surprising amount of information, spontaneously understated detail, descriptive movement, and uniqueness of light in the atmosphere are characteristics of his personality. Michael E. Vermette Oil, Watercolor, Pastel Painter, and Instructor BIOGRAPHY Michael is intrigued with the timelessness in change in his figurative and landscape paintings. He believes that visual rightness is captured in his paintings when active humanity engages with the force of nature to become a metaphor for an even deeper truth. Michael's paintings show a love of color and light with emphasis on the expressive painterly mark and form which evoke a recognizable feeling, a nostalgic memory, or emotional qualities such as the smell of salt and balsam in the air. In his oils, watercolors, and pastels he emboldens color by putting into practice traditional methods of the masters to cause the pigment to be brighter, richer, and more translucent. Careful watchfulness and attention to understated materials and detail, descriptive movement, purity of light, and the uniqueness of the atmosphere are characteristics of his personality. MICHAEL E.
