José Gislero is a Swiss painter whose work explores the tension between personal memory and universal suffering. After a diverse international career in engineering, he dedicated himself to art in 2008, training at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" in Havana, Cuba. Currently based in Andalucía, he has developed a practice that reflects his experiences living between contrasting cultures and environments. His work centers on figurative and expressionistic oil paintings that often function as narrative reflections or "painted prayers." Gislero utilizes the richness of oil on canvas to blend the material and spiritual worlds, frequently employing a deep and somber palette to capture the emotional weight of his subjects. His series, such as "Gaza" and "Shadows," focus on the vulnerability of the human condition and the enduring strength found in maternal protection. For Gislero, the act of painting is a process of witnessing and recovery, where personal history and global events converge. By addressing themes of violence, fear, and the resilience of marginalized peoples, he seeks to harmonize opposites and create a sense of balance. Each canvas serves as an invitation to introspection, transforming the weight of the past into a powerful dialogue on identity, survival, and the search for peace.
