About The Artwork

I appreciate this interplay between the illustration drawn from a poster and the torn paper work, reminiscent of torn concert posters found in various cities. This play of tearing and reappropriating the image interests me greatly. Being primarily interested and inspired by my own private life as well as everything surrounding romantic relationships and human connections, there is in this artwork a struggle against the toxicity that can exist in certain romantic relationships or in relationships that have ended. Hence, this work of tearing along with the presence of a fighter jet, battling against this toxicity despite the fact that this struggle may be futile.

Maxime Déria, an artist hailing from Brittany, shapes his art through the medium of collage—a process that testifies to his love for spontaneity and creative authenticity. From a young age, Maxime displayed an affinity for drawing by replicating tags he admired on the streets. His notebooks, filled with spontaneous creations, bear witness to his early love for art. Alongside his studies in an entirely different field, Maxime never abandoned his passion for painting and illustration. His true artistic immersion began in 2021 when, as a birthday gift, he received painting materials, marking a renewal in his artistic expression. Throughout 2022, he experimented with various techniques, but it was in 2023, when he was selected by Desperados for an artist residency project, that he truly expanded his artistic horizons. Inspired by constraints and personal evolutions, Maxime moved from paper to canvas, and then to collage, thanks to a serendipitous discovery in a bookstore that reignited his interest in this technique. Attached to his region, he draws inspiration from the history and culture of Brittany, attending exhibitions at Frac in Rennes to nourish his creativity. Deeply moved by the works of Raymond Hains and Jacques Villeglé, Maxime discovered the impact of their work at the art gallery of the School of Fine Arts in Saint-Brieuc, strengthening his connection to the artistic richness of his region. Maxime's works, initially dreamlike, now reflect his private and love life. Using painting and collage as an exposed intimate journal, he invites the viewer to interpret his creations through their own experiences. Working primarily on intuition, Maxime creates works rich in subtleties and hidden messages, linked to his intimate life. Despite the inherent intimacy in his work, he encourages viewers to take the time to contemplate his pieces, revealing hidden references and evoking personal emotions. Optimistic and inspired by romantic adventures, Maxime predominantly employs French in his works as he considers it the language of romanticism, allowing him to add an additional dimension to his work. His works, even those with darker tones inspired by fashion, always emanate a vibrant and captivating positivity. Maxime aspires for his creations to evoke various emotions and offer a contemplative experience rich in interpretations.
