The Danseurs project is a study of a relation between a painters gesture and a dancers movement. This serie is very joyful and light. The mediums are various, mostly gouache on paper, but recently also wood cut and oil painting. This painting is a joyful expression of a happy summer party. This painting is a part of a bigger project of a series of works around the theme of dance. I was working on a sketch for a fresque for a private commission and the dance motif appeared in the discussion. I worked on a series of sketches, watched videos of Pina Bausch choreography, studied artistic references of this motif – in the works of Picasso, Matisse, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec… Suddenly I realized I was more and more appealed by this universe and felt a strong urge to create more and more paintings inspired by dance.

Joanna Rzezak was born and grew up in Warsaw in 1988. In 2013 she graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, with a Master of Arts degree. She lives and works in Paris, a place that is a permanent source of inspiration. She was awarded a scholarship for artistic achievements in 2016 by the Ministry of Culture in Poland. During her academic course she tried different media and techniques: drawing, poster, lithography, screen print, painting, sculpture. She likes to switch through techniques but a strong outline always somehow reappears in her works no matter the technique she would choose. Experiment is something she tries to include in her everyday work. She favors ink and gouache but tries to work more with color pencil and wood cut. She likes to work on multiple series of works at the same time. Setting a few themes and switching between them helps her avoid getting stuck in a creative process. There are a few series going on right now: Jungles, Danseuses and Sport. In her very detailed compositions of jungle ink drawings she explores the structures and dynamics of a simple line drawing. Her creative process starts with a sketch but not a detailed one because she believes the best things get born whilst making and although it means starting over sometimes that’s how she prefers to work. Jungles become an inscriptions of thoughts. A new series of works in gouache and woodcut has been initiated recently and has been a surprise to the author herself. The Danseuses project is a study of movement, a dynamics of a gesture. A relation between a painters gesture and a dancers movement. This serie is very joyful and light. Playing with an old culture motif of dancing figure present in the works of Picasso, Matisse, Degas.
