ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Ephemeral early morning light in empty spaces, with the figure of the girl and the cushion being the only solid things; dark against light; half-way to Degas' "contre-jour" paintings, but with more surrounding light. Normally I paint onto a black background but here I wanted to let the black be a prescence in its own right. She is listening to the dawn chorus, the birdsong, perhaps waiting for a bird to hop in from the lawn, through the wide open doors.

Born Cairo, Egypt 19.9.1949. I have painted for my living for over 50 years, through thick and thin. Nowadays I have my studio in West Dorset, previously North Yorkshire. In normal times, I aim to travel for half the year, painting as I go, usually in goache, very portable. All my painting is on a black background, and the image emerges out of the Void, a fairly thrilling process. The subject matter: I only paint what I find beautiful, fascinating, and what makes me happy. These qualities mean the paintings will outlast the whims of fashion.
