About The Artwork

This work sold in October 2017 (from Grande Provence Gallery in Franschhoek, near Cape Town), to a buyer from California. “District X” 2017 is an open piece of veld, scattered with rubble with vague hints of squat shelters. The source site for this work is the upper region of District 6 in Cape Town. It is an area steeped in history. In the words of Koeka Stander: "Your painting is absolutely amazing. I love the kaleidoscopey patterns that you accentuated certain ares with - in the front, they feel like living emotional scars where there used to be a happy bustling community; above the mountain, it's like echoes of sounds that have been silenced by bulldozers but that still reverberate. There is also what reminds me of an ox wagon wheel/ferris wheel ... delicious. I love the colours, the slight cubism, mixed with your unique patterns, those joyous pink circles and houses that are no-houses, the cave-art-like feeling in the mountains. It is so HAPPY... a wonderful subversion of the truth. TRANSPORTING, GLORIOUS, BRILLIANT!"

Mark is an original; an innovator with a background in engineering and a soul in the arts. In his early career he founded the "Odd Enjinears" (misspelled engineers) who played the arts festival circuits in South Africa and in the Netherlands with site-specific shows (in old power stations or a blacksmith forge for example). He has invented many musical instruments. He has also designed and created many public sculptures and commissioned private works. Currently he has returned to painting and is loving it.
