About The Artwork

'Portraits without apparent faces' is a series that reflects a personal vision of some important contemporary issues. For me it represents a sum of questions and problems about the coexistence of different ways of interacting between humans. What may seem shocking to one person may not be shocking to another. The sublime and the ridiculous, the solemn and the laughable, the violent and the exquisite converge in time and space. I'm interested in exploring everyday scenes, the habits we do almost impulsively without really thinking about them. I want to transform this insignificant moment into reflection through my art to generate different meanings. There is not a single person in the universe who has a cartography similar to another, cartography is like a fingerprint. We undertake various paths in our daily life and we do it voluntarily or by obligation. I go out and take photos of legs and then I paint those images on canvas using different techniques and styles to convey physical and mental heterogeneity. Sometimes a simple gesture reveals who we are. My goal is to make people understand that they are involved in the story, the viewer should approach my paintings as if he were looking in a mirror and take a point of view from his own reality. This series is an attempt to capture times and cultures.

Yalili Mora ( Cuba, 1972) is a visual artist based in Barcelona. She has earned a BA from the National School of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba. She is a former member of the extinct Cuban collectives Grupo Punto and Coordenada Arte-Sur. Among her solo shows are included Portraits without Apparent Faces at the Cultural Centre Sant Agustí, Barcelona, Spain (2021) and Installations at the Ludwig Foundation (1999); as for her participation in group shows, Yalili Mora’s work has been included in Art Nostre 19, Alicante Biennial of Visual Arts, Spain (2021); Inventario: Grupo Punto 20 años at the Ludwig Foundation in Havana, Cuba (2015) and While Cuba Waits: Art from the Nineties at Track 16 Gallery, Los Angeles, USA (1999).
