About The Artwork

"Doly" is one of the portraits of real cows from the triptych titled "Feeding time" that captures the cows in the original barn setting during their dinner. I've spent quite a lot of time with these subjects and got to know them quite well. I also named them, since they didn't have any names before I started painting them. This cow was the mother of Metka, the one on the right side of the group. She was a very peculiar cow, very timid, and not very friendly with humans. If one tried to touch or pet it, she started shaking her head in a very odd and aggressive way. I heard a story that when she was a calf she injured her head and that was also a reason her horns grew as they did. Series used to consist of four portraits of cows and was also exhibited as such, but one got removed and is now remade as an individual portrait.

Lara Ješe is an artist living and working in Kranj, Slovenia. She holds an MFA in Painting and Fine Arts, acquired at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. She has also studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, expanding her knowledge in the fields of Graphic Printing. Growing up in the countryside near Kranj, Slovenia, she found her artistic interest in animals, particularly horses and cattle, which became a recurrent subject in her work. The motif allows her to explore the balance between portraiture and figure, in other words between psyche and the flesh, and to research the body within allegorical situations.
