These two pieces stand out from the rest of my work as they mark the transition from Montreal to Phnom Penh. They were first paintings I made after first setting foot in Asia. These two are not like my other work, where I did a lot of action painting, dripping colours onto the canvas--or the compression or printmaking technique I often use. With these two particular works, I grabbed the first thing I could lay hands on--in this instance it was a comb--used it to achieve the texture, but I ended up leaving a lot more white space than usual. When it comes to technique, I never "plan" exactly what colour palette or implements I might use (if any). I just let my intuition guide me, and let the chips (in some cases the drips) fall where they may. When I finished this diptych, I was struck by the fact that so many people responded in different ways. This is one of the main reasons why I love abstract art--people see what they want to see. Some could see a figure like a rooster, a horse or a dragon, while others could 'feel' the emotion behind the texture and gestural marks. But the best comment I have ever had was from a young child, named Noah, who declared, "I'm not sure what it's about, but I like rainbows art even if it doesn't mean anything. My partner helps me with naming my work sometimes, and she suggested "Dragon's Head Nebula" because apparently it looks like the supernova remnants of an exploded star with that name. I like the idea of a nebula-- beginnings, endings, change.

Régis Pineault is an emerging visual artist from Montreal, Canada, recently relocated to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Born and raised in Gaspésie, options were limited, so he made the move to Montreal at the age of 20, a city with a lively arts and music scene. His early creative exploits centred mainly around music and writing, before moving on to visual art. In search of spontaneous creative freedom, jazz improvisation held much appeal for him, but he felt compelled to to express his creative energy in other ways besides music and writing. Once he began to explore painting, he discovered his innate talent for colour in abstract painting. His work could be described as action or intuitive painting. It was not a decision to paint this way—it was a necessity. He strives to expose the unconscious, letting himself be guided solely by intuition, thus allowing everything buried deep inside burst forth in an explosion of colour on the canvas. The result is a series of works that reveal a range of emotions—from turmoil and chaos to jubilance and joy. His diverse body of work can be grouped into various themes that express his current moods and reactions to the struggles in his daily life and the world around him. All pictures of the art are taken with natural light only. No retouching, no filters.
