Tim Snell is a Canadian artist based in New York. He paints in the Catskills, New York as well as in his Manhattan studio. Snell has completed site specific projects such as murals and mosaics on a large scale that engage in the public narrative. In 2002 Snell won a commission from the MTA for a series of mosaics located in the New York subway station at 8th Street station on the Broadway line. The images reference the surrounding neighborhood through a series of portals depicting the past and present of the area. Go to Broadway Diary//Tim Snell to view the 43 mosaics. Work on color field mural paintings utilizing pigmented plaster techniques led to an interest in surface manipulation in painting. The small, intimate work he is pursuing now reflects those abstract interests and are combined with his exposure to icon painting encountered on various travels. The compact dimensions of the current work and its portable nature are intended to facilitate the vagaries of modern living. A more extensive catalog of Tim's work can be viewed at www.timsnell.net.
