About The Artwork
This mixed media piece is created using oil paint for the figure and encaustic wax for the background. I love using contrasting textures and wax always makes for an interesting surface, I also use natural fibers with the wax to create an even more 3-dimensional texture. But interestingly the figure which is completely 2-dimensional seems to stand out in front of the textured background. The piece is called 'Dreaming of the forest', it is the first of a series in which I am using myself as the subject. I wanted to capture a place and a state in which I feel I am returning to my original self, back to nature and back to the earth. It conjures up memories of my childhood wilderness, growing up near Wales. It is almost as if the subject is dreaming up thier own memory of an enchanted forest, manifesting it around them. I am originally from the UK and have lived in the states for the last five years. I currently live in upstate new york after moving up from west palm beach florida. I grew up in the Shropshire and Herefordshire areas, near the welsh border in peaceful farming countryside in the shadow of the black mountains. But I also call the picturesque Mein valley in the Frankurt area, Germany, home. I am half german on my mother's side and was brought up bilingual. I have also travelled a lot, mostly through europe, incuding Iceland and Praugue but also Mexico and Colombia and of course the states. I love the raw exitment of finding myself alone and lost in a foreign place I have never been before, in a lands and cultures alien to me.
